UNIONISM v. CITY COUNCIL
TO THK EDITOR. Sir, — Is the City Council to be run by Messrs. Reardon and O'Keefe and their following, or by sensible men? Surely it is time citizens and ratepayers put their feet down against this kind of terrorism. lam a unionist, but lam simply disgusted with this kind of unionism, as I consider labourers in the City Council and in general avo much in advance of tradesmen, who have to serve an apprenticeship on small wages, buy took, attend technical schools, and supply more than the -ordinary stock of brains that a labourer requires. Take a saddler or a cabinetmaker, and many other trades, and I am prepared to say from start to finish the labourer comes off best. Our rents and rates are high enough, and if the council is led by the nose by this crowd, God help us. Our thanks are due to the members of the City Council, who have the backbone to act like men and speak in the interests of the citizens in general. The insults which they are subjected to should not be forgotten upon election day. The City Engineer should likewise be protected. — I am, etc. A MODERATE 'UNIONIST. Wellington, 4th April. 1911.
