The Consistory Court found the Rev, John Lax, vicar of Stainmore, in Westmoreland, guilty of misconduct. [A scandal was caused in September, 1909, when it became known that Mr. Lax and his schoolmistress had been waylaid by a band of masked men. The vicar was bound, gagged, and tarred, and a mock service was read over him. Subsequently eight young parishioners wero arrested, convicted of the offence, and fined £5 each. The cross-examination of witnesses suggested that the vicar, _ a married man, had been guilty of misconduct.]
