THE PENNY COLLECTION PROPOSAL. TO THE EDITIOR.
Sir, — In reference to +h<? penny collection hospital fund scheme suggested by two Gar. Company employees, the scheme is all right as ttu 1 as ii goer, and the motive is a good one, but. the same idea was tried, 1 believe, over Iwenly-foivr years ag<i in a Laneashhc town. It worked comfortably enough for a time, but, Sir. we oft-en hear ol people growing tired of a thing, and the scheme ended in failure. Messrs. Lumsden and Jone3 are proposing to take on a big task, and one which, I am afraid, .will
become a burden to them. There ar* sure to be grumblers, and it is not a cheering thing to listen to incessant growling. A word as to the coHection of the money by the reduction principle : This form of collection is never good and never welcome. It takes Hie form of being a compulsory reduction, even if it is not so, and people ac a rule prefer to be free agents. There are many who would bitterly resent this form of collection, though they would give cheerfully of their own free, will. I should say it would be far better to collect the penny each week. A box placed in each department of every work-shop will answer the purpose much better. And do as we did in England : Post up a notice the day before, reminding tho employees that the penny is due— " Now girls, now men, don't forget your penny to-morrow." This helps to remind the workers to be sure "ana have tho penny change ready. I can remember quite well getting our pennies ready, and very interesting it was, as we passed out on each pay-day, to drop our pennies in a box placed for the purpose at the door of each room. Ifc was a pleasure to do thing 3in this way, — nor did I ever hear a single grumble. I feel sure, Sir, that this way would b« far preferable to the reduction system.— 1 I am, etc.. M. WHITEHEAD. 16th February.
