At the end of eighty minutes' play, Canterbury had lost one wicket for 91. " Hayward was unable to take his place behind the wickets, owing to an injured hand, and was replaced by Sale, Wallace fielding as substitute. Kerr and Peaison were the bowlers. Lusk and Caygill batted very carefully. The score reached 90 despite several changes in the bowling. Then Sneddon clean bowled Caygill, who j batted one hour twenty-five minutes for I 26 runs. ! Norman was the next man in. The century was reached at the end of 131 minutes' play. Five runs later Pearson got Norman lbw. Ca-rlton. joined Lusk, opening with a single off Kerr's first ball. A confidentappeal for a catch at the wicket against j Lusk was not allowed, the batsman then ! driving Kerr over the boundary for four. Pearson's next ball came fast o'fE the pitch, and beat Lusk, but missed the wicket, the batsmau agaiii showing his gratitude with another boundary, bringing his total up to- 70. Lusk was batting confidently, but luckily. He brought up 120 by sending Kerr for four. With the last ball of the over Kerr clean bowled Carlton with a , be?uty that kept low and came in.
