BASE FOR PROTECTIVE WORKS. TPIE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright NEW YORK, 27th January. The fJnited States is pressing a proposal for the lease from Ecuador of the Galapagos Islands, for the purpose of using thorn as a base t<o protect the Panama Canal. The American Government is offering £7,000,000 for a 99 years' fease of the islands, with a guaramteo of Ecuador's sovereignty over the group. [Tha Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, about 730 miles we*b of Ecuador, to which they belong. They consist of five largo and aglit small islands of volcanic origin, the area of the whole group being rather under 3000 square miles. Tho population number about 400.]
