A GUARD SERIOUSLY INJURED.

AUCKLAND, 25th January. A serious accident happened at Mercer this afternoon to a guard named Richard Kemp, a native, 20 years of age. He was bringing in his train from the Waikato, and while the train was being run on to a siding the guard's van took the points. Kemp was evidently taken unawares, and was thrown out, his head striking a sleeper. He sustained a fractured skull, and was brought to Auckland to-night for treatment. At Greytown yesterday afternoon (telegraphs our correspondent), Ah Chong, a well-known storekeeper, died in his back yard. He was ill, and had had medical attendance. Recently he sold his business to two young compatriots, and was preparing to go to China. It is intended to send his body there by next boat. Mr. W. Benton, builder, of Featherston, met with a painful accident on Tuesday evening (states our special correspondent). He was engaged cleaning out the generator of the acetylene gas plant, and took into the shed a lighted candle, when a violent explosion took place. The building or the generator do not appear to have suffered at all, but the force of the explosion took Mr. Benton full in the face, inflicting serious burns. Unfortunately, his eyes were injured. Mr. Be-nton had just returned from Auckland, whither ho had gone with a bowling rink from the Featherston Bowling Club.
