In connection with the army contracts' scandals, a famous ballerina was suspected of receiving bribes from the agents of foreign ordnance firms on account, of her influence with certain Grand Dukes. The police ransacked her house, dospite the Grand Dukes' protests, and seized many cases of jewels, in order to trace the purchasers. [A sensation was caused last month by the arrest of M. Meyer, head of one of the Government gun factories, together with several of his associates, on charges of maladministration. A strict enquiry was ordered.] QUICK VENGEANCE. FOUR SIBERIANS MURDERED. Four robbers, armed with hunting knives, murdered four members of a household near Krasnoyarsk, in Eastern Siberia, and bound a fifth who was a girl of eighteen. A brother unexpectedly returned and shot three of the murderers with a Browning revolver, and set dogs upon the fourth, which tore him to pieces. TO FIGHT CHOLERA. « AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE. The New South Wales Journalists' Institute has negatived ths proposal already adopted by the Melbourne journalists to form a union, and register under the Commonwealth Arbitration Act. TOKIO, 21st January. The Prime Minister, Marquis Katsura, in speaking in the Diet, said Japan's relations with the Powers were cordial. The British alliance was gaining in strength with age. Japan expected to complete new commercial treaties with all the Powers without difficulty. The national expenditure on armaments would be restricted to the country's necessities.
