The Emperor Francis- Joseph has bestowed on Captain Matthews, of the bteamer Lowther Grange, a gold watch with the Imperial initials in diamonds for services in connection with the Austrian Lloyd steamer Trieste, disabled off Aden in June last. Captain Andrews, of the tug Dievan, has been presented" with a pair of binoculars adorned with the Emperor's signature The Lowthen Grange's first officer and six seamen have received monetary rewards, and the widow of the engineer who was killed has been given 10,000 kronen (about £400). Admiral Slade and the Governor of Aden have been specially thanked. The Trieste broke her propeller shaft oa IGth Juno, when 400 miles from Aden. Awnings were improvised as sails, and a distance of 900 miles was sailed until th« collier Lowther Grange was sighted. During the next six days heroic efforts were made to tow the disabled ship, terrible weather prevailing. The Lowther Grange's second engineer was drowned, 'and nine of her crew injured as the result of a steel hawser, attached to the Trieste, snapping when towing began. Meanwhile provisions were scarce, and the cargo was broached, macaroni and raisinsbeing consumed. Heavy seas broke the hawser when the vessels were near Bombay, and the Trieste was towed into Bombay Harbour on 4th July with great difficulty.
