MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

♦ To-day's s'tting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. In the Juvenile Court, a boy thirteen years of age was convicted of having stolen £4 in money from George Davis. The boy's mother, a widow, stated that eh was not under control ; she had missed sums of money herself on various occasions. She asked that her son be committed to some industrial institution. A sum of £1 6s 6d found on the lad was ordered to be handed to Davis, and the boy was sent to Weraroa Industrial Farm. Two persons, on the occasion of their first lapse into insobriety, forfeited their bail (10s each). A third — a much-han-daged seaman on the Matatua, found helplessly drunk on Lambton-quay — was ordered to pay a guinea medical expenses, default being 48 hours' detention. He will be placed on board if the ship sails before expiry of that time. John Christensen admitted having been intoxicated, and was mulcted in a penalty of 10s, with a 48 hours' option. Similar treatment was awarded James Williamson. Ninety-five previous convictions stood aginst Frank Lyness, with a string o faliases, who was penalised to the extent of 20s for a drinking bout, his alternative being seven days' imprisonment. Nieri Engird, an articled seamau on the barque King" Malcolm, admitted having unlawfully absented himself from the vessel without leave, and >vas sentenced io a month's detention, also ordered to pay solicitor's fee, £1 Is, and court costs 10s. If the barque sails before expiry of that time, he will be placed on board. Mr. C. R. Dix appeared for the master of the ship. Mr. Thomas Bland, J.P., presided at this morning's sitting of the Mount Cook Police Court, when two first offenders were convicted and discharged for drunkeness, and one first offender, on bail, who did not appear, was fined 10s.
