ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.

Further evidence was heard at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., in the prosecution against Thomas Duffy, charged with having obtained goods' to the value of £70, on 2nd August, from Norman Edward Aitken, of Wellington, by means of alleged false pretences, and with intent to defraud. Chief Detective Broberg prosecuted, and accused was defended by Mr. A. Dunn. Accused stated with reference to the promissory notes about which the dispute had arisen, and which were to cover £70 half-payment for the purchase of Aitken's stationery business in Moles-worth-street, that he did not inform Aitken that Bernard Duffy, jun., had endorsed' the bill, but on the other hand he was certain that at no time after » the bills were given to Aitken was it represented that they were endorsed by Bernard Duffy, sen. (The bills were accepted by Aitken on the understanding that they were endorsed by Bernard Duffv, sen ; they were afterwards referred back from the bank, and complainant found that the signature was that of Bernard Duffy, jun.). William Sydney Horricks and James M'Parland gave further evidence for the defence. Duffy was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being allowed to stand as before.
