The banking averages for the State for the past quarter show a decrease of £576,000 in deposits, but an increase of £1,722,uj0 in advances. EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS. PERTH, This Day. Two earthquake shocks occurred at Marble Bar, the chief town of the Pilbarra goldficlds-, on Saturday. They were accompanied by a thunderous noise. The only damage done was to crockery. HANDLING OF FROZEN MEAT. LONDON, 17th October. Sir George Reid, Australian High Commissioner, visited the Manchester Docks, and examined with interest the methods of handling, refrigeration, and storage of Australian perishable produce. ON THE ACTIVE LIST. LONDON, 17th October. The Atlantic Transport Company's liner Minnehaha, 13,433 tons, which ran on to the rocks at the Scilly Isles in April last, has been repaired and will resume service. [The vessel struck at midnight on 18th April, during a fog. The passengers rushed on deck in their night attire, but the captain persuaded many of them to return to their cabins and dress. After the captain had ascertained the depth of water in the forehold, the boats were lowered, and the passengers were taken ashore. The ov«w remained on board.] > PARIS-IN-LONDON. LONDON, 17th October. The promoters of ifoe Paris-in-London Exhibition have not fulfilled their agreement to secure a site at A'ldwych, and their deposit of £5000 is forfeited. Their option, however, is to be extended to Ist December on payment of a further £2500. BARQUE'S NOVEL EXPERIENCE. SYDNEY, 17th October. The barque Northern Chief had* 1 a peculiar experience off Newcastle. A fifty-foot whale swam alongside and occasionally rubbed the vessel's side, with the object, apparently, of ridding itself of marine growths. It did no damage to the ship. ISSUES OF GERMAN CAPITAL. BERLIN, 17th October. German capital issues during the past nine months totalled ,£42,452,000. PRINCE FRANCIS OF TECK. LONDON, 17th October. Prince Francis of Teck, who has been suffering from aevere illness, is maintaining his strength well. CAMDEN-ROAD MURDER CASE. LONDON, 17th October. Hawley Crippen and Ethel Leneve, charged with the murder of Crippen's wife at Camden-road, will» be tried separately. SUCCESS OF LABOUR EXCHANGES. LONDON, 17th October. The labour exchanges established by the Act passed last year filled 45,314 vacancies during September. INOCULATION FOR TYPHOID. The Consistory Court of the Diocese of Peterborough decided that in so doing he was guilty of immorality.
