LABOUR TROUBLES.
COTTON LOCK-OUT. OPERATIVES POSTPONING SETTLEMENT. FINESSING FOR STRIKE PAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. LONDON, sth October. Several cotton mill-owners in Lancashire have offered to employ Howe (the grinder whose dismissal from the Fern Mill at Oldham precipitated the lockout now in force); but it is stated the operatives are not desirous of an immediate end of the trouble. Howe's re-employment was made a condition precedent, on the part of the operatives, to arbitration; but if the strike is finished before Thursday lockout pay will be withheld. STRIKE AT COLOGNE. NON-UNIONISTS ASSAULTED. MOB CHARGED BY THE POLICE. BERLIN, sth October. Navvies on strike at Cologne bombarded non-strikers, who were leaving work under police escort, with paving cobbles. The police charged the mob with drawn sabres, and thirteen strikers and one policeman w-ere wounded in the melee that followed. RESOLUTIONS AT TRADE CONGRESSES. (Received October 6, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, sth October. At the Miners' Federation Conference in Edinburgh the speakers urged that meetings should be held to agitate for the j nationalisation of mines. The Raihyaymen's Congress demanded the restoration of the trades unions' right of engaging in Parliamentary activity, and protested against Labour exchanges supplying employers with blacklegs during trade aispute's. STRIKE AT ADELAIDE. HIGHER WAGES WANTED. " (Received October 6, 10.20 a.m.) ADELAIDE, This Day. A hundred labourers employed by the Neuchatel Asphalt Company have struck for a rise of a shilling a day. This demand is higher than the Government payment.
