BIOGRAPH MISHAPS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —l read in Tuesday's Post an account of the experiences of a would-be bjograph operator at Waikaia, and would like to venture the opinion that it is nearly time some steps were taken to investigate the causes of these all too frequent explosions. The handling of dangerous chemicals, which generate highly explosive gases, by inexperienced operators is bound to have disastrous results, and it is surely a menace to public safety. A few weeka ago a similar disaster occurred in the Brill Hall at Kaikoura, when a gas tank was blown up to the ceiling. The operator, although seriously iniured, had a miraculous escape. This happened, fortunately, in the afternoon, before the show, when no one was present; otherwise, who knows what the consequences might have been? I would suggest that every individual who asphes to become a lantern or biograph operator should be compelled to submit to a strict examination by an appointed high authority, and demonstrations given. In the event of proving himself competent, a certificate of competency should be given him, and none but those duly certified be allowed to operate in public. —l am, etc., ' PUBLIC SAFETY. Wellington, sth October. BANK HOLIDAY. ♦ The bank& will he closed on Labour Day, 12th October.
