An anonymous gift of £25,000 has been received for the Queen Alexandra Sanatorium at Davos-Platz. [Davos is an Alpme Valley in the canton, of Grisons, Switzerland, fifteen males eouith-easib of Coire. The Shipwrecked Mariners' Society has presented Captain Simpson, of the steamer Pericles, lost off Cape Leeuwin, with a self-recording aneroid barometer in recognition of his courage at the time of the wreck. [The steamer struck an uncharted rock. The captann acted with promptitude and decision, none of tho passengers or crew {609 in all) being lost. It was stated at the time that "the splendid conduct of all aboard the vessel made the Pericles wreck more like a ndugh impromptu picnic than the terrible disaster it might easily have been."] AUSTRALIA AND A FRENCH EXHIBITION. Morane, using a monoplane, and Drexel in a- biplane, raced from Bournemouth to The Needles and back. The former was the winner. The time was 25min 123ec. (Received July 18, 9.5 a.m.) STRANDED STEAMER. LONDON, 17th July. The Pacific Mail S.S. Co.'s steamer Mongolia, 13,639 tons, which went ashore at Shemidzu, is on a sandy bottom. It is expected that she will be refloated. TWENTY-FOUR HOURS' CYCLING LONDON, 17th July. Bishop won the twenty-four hours' cycling contest at the Stadium, covering 501 miles 860 yards. Continued drought in Western Canada has reduced the wheat yield in Southern Manitoba to eight bushels an acre. The Daily Express states that King George has personally decided in favour of the reservation of space for the representatives of the self-governing Dominions at the opening of Parliament.. Hitherto they have been left to scramble for seats in the Strangers' Gallery. FATAL EXPLOSION ON A CRUISER. LONDON, 16th July. While the cruiser Sutloj, of 12,000 tons displacement, was manoeuvring off Berehaven (Ireland) an explosion occurred in the stokehold. One stoker was killed and four were critically injured. YACHT'S ROUND-THE-WORLD CRUISE. SYDNEY, 16th July. The yacht Pandora, which is engaged on a round -the- world cruise, has arrived from Bunbury. She will proceed to Pitcairn and Eastern Islands, and thonce to Auckland. Subsequently the Pandora goes on to New York. MARCONI STATION ON JUAN FERNANDEZ ISLAND. SANTIAGO, DE CHHiE, 16th July. The Chilian Government is erecting a Marconi station at Juan Fernandez, Island. [The Island, whicn belongs to Chile, is situated in tho South Pacific. The surface is rocky and mountainous. It was discovered by a Spaniard, Juan Fernandez, about 1583, was a resort of buccaneers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and it is famous for the solitary rosidonco (1704-09) of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor, the supposed original of Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe."] ASSASSINATION IN PERSIA.
