PENTECOST.

To-day is being generally celebrated as « holiday among the Jewish members of the community, being the day of Pente-cot-t. In. a special Pentecostal address at the Synagogue this morning, before- a large congregation, the Pvabbi (Rev. H. Van Stavereri) took his text from tho Prophet Amos, "Seek Good and not Evi 1 that Yfe May Live." He referred to the respect of the Jewish community for Christianity, and alluded with regret to tho words expressed in a newspaper a few days ago by a member of tho Jewish community in criticism upon the action of the chief prelate of the dominant Church of the Empire. He characterised the words as ungeneroui, unwise, and \incalled for. The Rabbi then quoted authorities in the Jewish church, Miamonedes and Jacob Emden, whose testimony had.been favourable towards Christianity. Some day the dispute among different religions would be settled, but | it would be settled in only one way, and ! that was by determining which religion produced the best men and women. It was like the fable of the three rings. The value of a religion was to be determined by the influence it had on life.

Repairs to the bad break, which oc curred in the Wainui main last week, are proceeding with due expedition, but it will be some days before the water will be flowing through again. At pre.sent the city is dependent on Karori supplies, and care should still be exercised until tho repairs are complete. The Wairarapa Daily Times reports that there is some talk of a concrete culvert being built, by private enterprise, over the Pakuratahi stream, which often proves a serious obstacle to motorists. If the creek rises suddenly, Tavellers from either side have to re nun to Wellington or Wairarapa as the .ase may be. A muster parado of the D Battery will fe« lieul to-morrow.
