KARORI DEFEAT UNITED. Karo-i, 2; United, 1. V.M.C.A., 6; Metropolitan, 3. Victoria College, 2; Wesley, 0. " t Struggles between United and Kai-ori for, years past have been a feature of thtAhcnior championship. The former have been mostly successful, but Karon make their best fight against them. On Saturday these two teams met for the ttrsl timo this season, and an exciting game followed. United had not lost a match prnviously, while Karori had suffered defeat at the hands of Victoria College, who are now leading for the championship by one point. Ufuted werb favourites, but Karori ptoved superior, and won an interesting tussle by one point. In the other cpntesUs Viet oi ia College defeated Wesley af'fe'r a. dose game, and V.M.C.A. Dedt Metropolitan, who strived hard for iuccess. Reports of the matches are appeuded : — KA'RORI (2) v. UNITED (1). The expectation that the meeting of United and Karori on No. 2 ground, Day's 'Bay, would be fruitful of excitement, was justified, the result being in doubt from beginning to end. From the commencement, United rushed matters, and it required Karori's soundest "defence to repel the attackers. They were equal to the others' efforts, until, from a bully-off in the twenty-five, the reds' forwards carried all before them to Karori's goal, whefe L. Davies, the i custodian, was overwhelmed, Jones, for Unite-d, being on him as soon as the ball reached him. A goal resulted, United drawing first- blood. United 1, Karori 0. Very even play followed. Then, just a' few minutes before half time, G. Daviey, by ingenious stick-work, dribbled past United"s centre-half, and careered on towards the 'fullbacks. When Hickson attempted to tackle . him, he transferred to his left wing — Pope — who hit into che net with a hard shot from a difficult angle. The spell ended — United l, Karori 1. At the start of the second stage of the proceedings Karori assumed the aggressive, United being called on to defend. The bladks(Karori) continued pressing, but *it was some time before they were rewarded. They obtained a footing in the circle, and from a position near the edge Glendall. playing inside right for' Karori, smote hard for the posts. Allen, in goal, shot his foot forward, aiid the ball going over it, bounded into the net. United 1, Karori '2. A little later . there appeared every possibility that Davies would wend his way completely through the United ' backs a second time, but at the critical 1 moment Hickson, the representative fuli- ■ back, obftructed and spoiled the oppor1 Uuiity. The referee did not allow a i penalty bully. During the last minutes I of tho game United made strenuous efI forts to equalise matters, but their, attempts were met with an equally good j defence, and the game ended with Karori i triumphant, the score being : Karori 2, United 1. Di. Morpeth ref creed. VICTORIA COLLEGE (2) v. WESLEY (0). After the splendid showing against V.M C.A. at Day's Bay a week ago, it was fully anticipated that College would do better against Wesley at Kelburne. At the commencement it looked as though Wesley (blue) were de termined to score, but after the game had been in progress a short time the College forwards asserted themselves, and goals almost resulted on two or three occasions. Each time, however, the blues saved the situation by hitting behind. When College did happen to get the bal' nicely placed within tho'' circle - their shooting power proved to be poor, With the many opportunities discarded, the tpell ended without score. In the second spell College again proved - their weakness, when in the circle. They had several chances, which they failed to make good use of. At last, G. Strack secured the ball, hit it hard against Beere's pad, whence it glided into the net. yViter a fine rush Smith scored the second, ancl w,hat proved to be the final goal for the greens. To the end play was mostly of an even character. Mr. Southwick was the referee. V.M.C.A. (6) v. METROPOLITAN (3).
