SUPREME COURT.
i TWO DUCKS. Before the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court to-day Henry Smith was charged with the. theft of two ducks from the premises of Arthur Edward Preston in Sages-lane, with breaking and entering the premises from which the ducks were stolen, and with being a rogue and a vagabond, having been found without lawful excuse on the premises of Arthur E. Preston. The facts were fully ie ported recently. Mr. Wilford appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. Accused's defence was that he lived opposite Preston's. He heard a disturbance amongst the ducks — they were flying at the netted wire — and he went over to see ■what was wrong. He went into the duckhouse, and on coming out was grabbed by a policeman. Two witnesses gave evidence as to character. William Brown said accused had been a paymaster for him on the West Coast, and that he was as honest a man ab the witness knew in New Zea land.
