♦ GLUT OF. ISLAND ORANGES. Two steamers from the Islands at once have glutted the local fruit market in so far as orangee are concerned. The Mokoia arrived from Tahiti and Raratonga on Thursday, and arriving also at the same time were neavy consignments of the same -fruit via Auckland. Prices at first ruled from 6s to 7s 6d a case, but went- back to 4s to ss. Sydney-grown oranges were also on the market, and realised 3s 6d to 4s. Choice lines of bananas brought 10s per case, and were in strong demand. Enquiries ior Sydney lemons are fair at 7s to 96 a case. Australian grapes ■went to-day at 8s to 10s a 301b box. There is a good enquiry for passion frnit. Cooking apples brought to-day from 3s to 4s a case, and dessert varieties from 6s to 7s, with 8s to 9s for extra good coloured varieties. Cooking pears were quitted at fTom 3s 6d to 4s a case, and desserts at 5s to 7s, the supply showing some signs of becoming shorter as the season advances. Cape gooseberries brought 3d to 4d per Id during the week, and quinces 3s to 3s 9d a case. Really first-class potatoes were difficult to obtain at £6; but there are plenty not- guaranteed free from Dlight at prices up to £5. The price for the very best blight-free Up-to-Dates is hardening. Owing to an abundance of onions, prices are rather low, the heavy consignments Being unexpected. Other vegetables are generally low in price on account of the large quantities coming, to hand. Good cauliflowers are, however, scarce at 9s to 12s a sack ; but cabbages are abundant, and prices have receded during the week from 5s to 6s a sack 'to 2s to 3?.
