CONTROLLING GATES.
A device having for its object the. controlling of gatei of railway aud other carriage* has been patented by .Mr. Charles Delville, of Blenheim. Ino invention relates particularly to the gates usually mounted on the platforms of railway carriages in order to prevent pas •engers falling off, but may aUo be applied to tramcars. It s t designed with the object of providing for the automatic clocing of these gate* when the carriage (.tart* to move and for the gates being .'gain immediately closed if opened while the carriage is in motion. Instead of swinging on a hinge the gate slide* longitudinally with carriage*. It is kept normally drawn back, co as to free toe opening, by means of a spring. Along the bottom inside edge of the gat« is a ratchet bar engaging a tooth attached to a spring bar. The action of the tooth in gripping the ratchet keeps tho gate closed. The spring bar, however, conliects with » footplate which when depreued by the foot of a passenger entering the car it supposed to relente tho sate and frees the opening. A second footplate inside the gate admits of the lime process of opening to a passenger getting out. The gates aro closed automatically, when the carriage, railway or otherwise, starts, by a rod actuated by n crank from a small wheel running underneath the carriage on the rail. Such a rod, it is claimed, may be adapted to clots, any desired number of gates on a train. After the gate is cloied the rod will slid* idly to and fro.
