PETONE AND HUTT ITEMS.
The annual report of tho vestry of St. Augustine's, Petone, speaks with appreciation of the work of tho newlyappointed assistant curate, Rev. A_ H. The parishioners are urged to bear this in mind when making their contribution*. The bazaar organised by the Ladies' Guild enabled the church to be painted and the indebtedness to be reduced from £750 to £700. The need for a gymnasium in connection with the church is urged. The services of Mrs. K. C. Kirk, the Miwe* Sladden, and Messrs. Monk and Lee, and the membent of the Ladift\' Guild and C.X.M. Society are specially acknowledged. The balance-sheet shows the general offertories to have been £287 (decrease U'iA), special offertories £68 (increase £8K subscriptions £176 (increase £69), bazaar returns £113. and total receipts (including- balance brought forward £89) £823 (increase £162). Evans) reported that the cash in hand toward the ambulance wagon was £90 10s 6d, and the total expenses to dato £4 4s. Further arrangements were made regarding the concert and danoc which is to bo held on Friday, 22nd April, in aid of the fund. It was 'decided to appoint Mrs. Bennett, the Mayor, Messrs. Cook, Cox, and Hancock as a sub-committee to arrange details as to the selection of a vehicle, and submit same to a meeting of the General Committee. Before Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, J.P., yesterday, a first offender, charged with drunkenness, was convicted and discharged. It is proposed to take steps to publicly recognise the services rendered on the football field by Mr. W. Hardham, V.C., for years captain of the Petone Football Club. An instance of how the climatic conditions .in tho Hutt and Wellington sometimes differ was seen yesterday. Passengers to the city by thf first train caught the train and left the Hutt in a heavy downpour of wind-swept tain. On reaching Wellington, twenty minutes or so later, the sun wan shining, and the wind, instead of blowing rain fiercely, w«s creating blinding dust-storms. A little of the rain would have been welcomed just then. Messrs. W. J. Kirk and James M'Pouprall have been elected stewards of the Petone Methodist circuit.
