The Daily Telegraph's Paris correspondent mentions a rumour coming trom a well-informed private source that Menelik. Emperoi of Abyssinia, (i'ifd several days ago. On Saturday a Router's telegram stated that Menejik, Emperor of Abyssinia, was dying ; that at his instance the Empress had been deposed, and that all the chiefs had taker the oath of fidelity to the neii-apparent. Meijelik 11., King of Shoa, was born in 1843, and succeeded to the' thrown in 1889. He is a G.C.B. and U.C.M.G. In 1908 he nominated Lidj Jeassii (bom in 1906), son of Ras Mikiiael and the Emperor's daughter, JShoagash, as his tucxessor. According to the Echo de Paris (18th February), despatches had been received iv Rerlin by the Deutsche Kabelgesellschaft definitely announcing that .Menelik had lost his reason, and that the Empress Taitou was ruling alone and giving plain evidence of very unfriendly sentiments towards the representatives of the Powera. The German physician, Dr. Steinkuhler, had been forbidden to remain at Adis Abeba. and had taken lefuge at the German Legation with the intention of leaving Abyssinia at an early date.
