SUB-SURFACE TORPEDOER.
IMMUNE FROM SMALL GUN FIEE. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyrignt. NEW YORK, 26th March. Tho Americas naval authorities are testing Mr. C. Barger's sub-surface torpedoer, which, it. is claimed, is immune from email gun fire. It costs £4500; its weight is six tons; its length is 48 feet ; and it carries a 1000-pound charge of gun-cotton. Two nien are stationed in the conning tower amidships, and they steer the vessel close to an opposing battleship, take aim, and then desert the torpedoer by means of lifeboats or lifebelts. According to the Navy League Annual, the United States last year ordered three trial sub-surface boats. The largest of these is to stparo 22 knots, and to cost £80,000, and the other two are to have a speed of 16 knots, and will only cost £4000 nach. The Annual adds : "Developments in the direction indicated by thi& order will be awaited with keen interest."
