SPORTS AT PETONE.
On Saturday, oja, the Petone Recreation Ground, a sports gathering was held under the auspices of the Hutt railway duplication employees. A benevolent fund, recently inaugurated by the men, will reap the benefit of any proceeds of the gathering. The results were as follow : — Maiden Handicap, 100 yd s: J. Ballantyne 1, J. Lockeridge 2. Schoolgirls' Race: Jane Nesbit 1, M. O'Sullivan 2. Hop, Step, and Jump : P. Howard 1, J. Lockeridge 2. Sack Race : A. Richards 1, H. M'Donald 2. Putting the Weight (161b): R. Collinson 1, Lockeridge 2. Married Ladies' Race : Mrs. O'Grady 1, Mrs. M'Kay 2. 100 yds Handicap (over 50 years) : Fitzgerald 1, J. Swan 2. Three-legged Race : Carson and Ramsden 1, Routledge and Casey 2. Three-mile Bicycle Race : E. Chesternian 1, Rigby 2. 200 yds Handicap (open) : J. Parker 1, J. Power 2. 220 yds Hurdles : R. Brown 1, W. Shaw 2. One mile and a-half Bicycle Race: J. Pearce 1, R. Probestal 2. Single Ladies' Race : Miss M'Donald 1, Miss Sinclair 2. High Jump : C. Power. Committeemen's Race : H. M'Donald 1, F. Dean 2. Mr. Lee's team won the tug-of-war contest,for which there were three entries. The married and single ladies were -also pitted against each other ,in a similar competittion, the former triumphing. During the afternoon the Wellington Pipe Band and a troupe of dancers provided further diversion.
