At an early hour this morning the intercolonial steamer Manuka arrived from Melbourne and Hobart via southern ports, and berthed at No. 1 north. Queen's Wharf, to discharge a quantity of Australian cargo and transhipments. The vessel left Melbourne at 3 p.m. on Wednesday week and Hobart at 12.30 p.m. on Friday last. North-westerly winds with smooth seas and fine weather were met with on the run to the Bluff, and these pleasant conditions continued on the coast. While at Dunedin and Lyttelton the Manuka took on board quantities of bunker coal, and operations were to be continued to-day at Wellington, so that the steamer should be able to return to New Zealand without inconvenience. She leaves at 5 p.m. to-day for Sydney direct. THE NAVUA. Late yesterday afternoon the Island trader Navua arrived from Suva via Auckland, and berthed at No. 2, Queen's Wharf, to discharge her usual consignment of bananas and other Island produce. The vessel had a fine weather run to Auckland, but encountered a fog off Castlepoint, which necessitated a slowing down till Palliser was abeam. At 4 p.m. to-day the Navua is to leave for Westporty, thence she goes to Auckland to sail for Suva again on the 22nd inst. The Clan Ogilvy, which arrived at Lyttelton on Wednesday morning, made a rather smart and uneventful passage of 12 days 8 hours from Bunbury. She has a large quantity of jarrah to land at Lyttelton, and will come to Wellington, thence possibly go to Picton to complete discharge. To-morrow the Kaituna, which is now discharging Westport coal at Wellington, is to leave for Kaipara to load timber for Melbourne. The Waiwera, which is due on Sunday from London via Auckland, will anchor in the stream to discharge about 70 tons of explosives. In the ordinary course she would then berth on Monday, and after discharge will go to the Bluff with the remainder of her cargo. Mr. R. T. Kearney, late of the HuddartParker Company's Sydney staff, has been appointed to a position in Messrs. Levin and Co.'s Foxton branch. On Tuesday evening an accident occurred on the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Kaipara at Timaru which delayed discharging operations for three hours. When a threshing combine was being unloaded a guy attached to the derrick broke, and the ponderous combine fell back into the hold with a great cra6li. A close inspection was to be made to reveal the full extent of the damage. . Some time this month the tramp Harley, a London-owned steamer of 4171 tons gross, is to call at Westport for bunker coal. On Tuesday next the chartered steamer Clan Ogilvy will be rebunkered at Wellington from the Poherua with Tyneside Company's coal. As the Union Company's scheme of superannuation does not apply to any one over S3 years of age, about eight shipmasters and ten chief engineers in the service of the company will be debarred from participation on that ground. There is about 1266 tons of general merchandise for Wellington on board the Tyser liner Nerehana, due here from London about the 23rd inst. The yacht Coronet, which created a stir in Australia some months ago owing to the mysterious manner of her entrance and exit, arrived at Portland, Maine, on the 17th September, after a three years' cruise. The owner is said to be contemplating another trip round the world.
