NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The Manawatu Racing Club is one of the- most liberal to horse owners in the Dominion, and the response received for the summer meeting is not encouraging to that up-to-date body to go on increasing the prizes. In the jumping events the falling oft' is most noticeable. The statement that there is a dearth of jumping "horses at present is hardly sufficient explanation after the good fields at Feilding last weejk, and the numbers engaged at Rangitikei. In the three open hurdle events at the Manawatu meeting the nominations total 17, which is less than the number engaged in one event at Bulls. The total received for the three hack hurdle events at Awapuni (28) is only two more than one event at Bulls. The Manawatu ■Club should also have got more entries in the flat races. There are only 15 in the Cup, a 600 soys stake, which number is not half as many in the Rangitikei Cup, worth 300 soys. The opening of the new course at Bulls probably had something to do with it. The owners of the twenty-one horses left in the Auckland Cup on Saturday have contributed 210 soys to the stake. As was generally expected, Master Soult and Elysian were allowed to drop out in favour of their stable mate First Gun. Lady Lucy (winner of the New Zealand Cup) was not engaged in the Northern race, but the place getters Roosevelt and Sir Prize, also Aberbrothock and Ringdove, good handicap winners at Riccarton, are included. With the exception of the" South, nearly every district is represented. The Blenheim, representative Lawn. Rose, who was unlucky at Riccarton, is to be given another chance of distinguishing herself. Although Bobrikoff dropped out Mr. Loury still has two representatives in the race. Chanteuse is only a pony, but her owner expects her to win a decent long distance handicap. The only other stable with more than one representative is Porirua, which is represented by All Red and Diabolo. When All Red and Bobrikoff ran first' and second last year the field did not include a well-performed three-year-old like Taskmaster, or brilliant middle distance performers like Muskerry and Ringdove. The Grand National Hurdle Race winger. Compass, who has recently been competing in flat races, has been left in both the Cup and Grafton Hurdles. >• Those who supported Sharpshooter as the probable from Sir Geo. Clifford's (stable, lost their money. That colt has been reserved for the Royal Stakes. Full Sail (winner of a double at Dunedin) has been left in the Ellerslie sprint race. The number of acceptors is less than in the Cup, and there will "probably be one or two more withdrawals. Mr. Watt paid up for both Theodore and Kilindini. The first-named has not run up to his two-year-old form this season. Kilindini has a handy impost of 7.7. For a pony Armlet is giving away a lot of weight. She has 121b more than she failed with last year. All Rod, Aberbrothcek, Downfall, Taskmaster, Sir Prize, and ' Roosevelt/ each have a lot of admirers. The Conqueror — Punawai gelding, engaged in the Maiden and Scurry events j at the Woodville meeting, is fullbrother to Pikiho and half-brother to Channel. He is a member of C. Pritchard's Hutt team, and has been named Haikahau. Bravery, who was among the winners at the Waikana-e meeting last New Year's Day, will be again among the picnickers this year. The Daystar gilding Twinkle will also be racing at Waikanae. Having won a race at the Feildmg meeting, Anseranser is not now eligible for the Maiden and Scyrry Races at the Woodville meeting, in which he was engaged. Soprano, the well-bred daughter 'of Menschikoff and Cissy, is .related to a long list of successful performers, commencing with Daystar and ending with Uranus. So far, Soprano has been distinctly disappointing. She is to be given another opportunity of earning distinction at Woodville this week. She accompanied her stable-mates Iney and Advantage to Woodville this morning. C. Pritohard left for Woodville this morning with Naumai and Rangikapua. Winners at x^eilding have incurred the following penalties at Woodville :—: — Grandstand Handicap, Captain Bell (101b), 8.11; Borough Handicap, Flingot (51b), 9.9; Electric Handicap, Nyland (lplb), 8.8. Idolatress who competed in the Hack Scurry at Feilding, is a well-bred mare by Gossoon — Idolatry (imported) by Isonomy — La Trappe, by Hermit. Idolatress was bred at Mr. S. Hordern's (New South Wales) Stud. King Post, who was disposed of by Mr. "Liskirk" after the Grand National Meeting, won part of the purchase money for his new owner the first time he carried his colours. The race he was sucj cessful in was the Hororata Cup, worth 55 6ovs ,and a silver cup valued at 10 guineas. King Post's new owner is Mr. "Andy" Pringle, a successful trainerrider of trotters, who, like Dave Price, Dan Nyhan and others, managed to prepare gallopers as well. Mr. E. J. Watt has engaged Bally Shannon, Bridge, Wimmera, and Separator at the Manawatu meeting. THE SPADE. WAIKANAE HACK RACING CLUB.
