OBITUARY.
Mr. Alexander Mackay," who was a Native Land Court Judge for many years, died at Feilding to-day, aged 7b years. The deceased gentleman was born in Edinburgh on 17th May, 1833. and educated at Norfolk House Academy, Southsea. In 1855 ho came out to No*lson with his uncle, the lato Mr. James Mackay, and for nineteen years ho ongaged in agricultural and pastoral pursuits. During that period ho learned the Maori language. In August, 1864, he was appointed a resident magistrate, and also Commissioner of the South Island Native Reserves. Later on he was mado Civil Commissioner for the South Island Native District. In 1882 he was transferred to Wellington, and made Commissioner of Native Reserves lot the whole colony, and Trust Commissioner under the Native Land Frauds Prevention Act, 1881. Ho several times aclcd as a royal commissioner, and -ho wrote two volumes on South Island nativo aft airs. jVIt". Mackay became a. Native Land Court Judge in May, 1884, and held tho offico for a number of years. Ho was married in 1853 to n daughter of Mi. H. S. Gibbs, for many years M.H.R. for Collingwood. His family consists of four sons and two daughters.
