An important discovery of galena ore has been made by a wood-cutter named Wallace, about fivr- miles from Zeehan.' The lodes average three feet in width. An assay of the ore gives 80 per cent, of lead and 00 ounces of silver to the ton. Galena, is essentially a sulphide of lead, the proportions being 13.4 sulphur: and 86.6" lead, but usually containing a little silver, and occasionally otlier minerals. It is of a lead-grey colc/ur, with a metallic lustre, and occurs in veins, beds, and embedded masses, often accompanying other metallic ore.< It is found abundantly in Britain and in parts of Europe and America. Almost all the lead of commerce is obtained from it, and it often contains a valuable proportion of silver.
