CARE OF THE BLIND.
SUGGESTED STATE MANAGEMENT. Mr. J. Barr (Canterbury) reported at the Trades and Labour Conference on Saturday, on behalf of a committee, on the provisions made for the care of the blind. The Victoria Home in .Auckland for the blind was one of the best south of the Line. As much was being done at the present time as could be done. The Minister for Education had given full information on the subject. The committee would recommend, however, that the care of the blind should be a subject of State management, and would urge, therefore, on the Governor the desirability of taking full charge and control of the Victoria Jubilee Institute, Auckland. Mr Horning (Auckland) said he would like to see the workers represented on the Board of Control. Mr P.us bridge (Canterbury) suggested that an institution should be established in the South Island. Mr. Jackson (Greymouth) asked that the necessity of going into a home should be considered. The blind should be treated as old-age pensioners were. It would probably cost less to keep the blind in this way. Mr. Barr explained that it was not necessary for the blind to go into an institution. Charitable Aid Boards assisted in the matter. The report was adopted.
