FIRE AT BROOKLYN.

«i . : A fire in Washington Avenue, BrookI lyn, at 3.21 o'clock this morning, caused + v v^ al and city file bri S ad es to visit the higher levels of the avenue near Vogeltown. The outbreak occurred in a six-roomed house owned and occupied by Jamea W. Stewart. It was twofold in character. At 8 p.m. on Sunday thb curtains and bed in a front room were found to be on fire, presumably through contact with, a candle carried by Mrs btewart, which was the only light that had been m the room that evening. It was thought that the use of .a few buckets of water had exteinguished th* fare, but it is surmised, now, that it was latent in the mattress, for at 3.21 o'clock this morning it broke out again, and the occupants were hard pressed by the flames. The front room was practically burnt out, and the remainder ol the building was severely damaged. There was an insurance policy of £300, in the Commercial Union, on the building, and °2f of £10 ° on the contents, in the State office The piano was covered by a separate policy for £50. Mr. John Dineen, whose house adjoins the destroyed building, had the wall of his house damaged, and the windows and wall papers affected by heat. By the use of buckets of water the house was preserved from further mishap. It was insured in the Liverpoo), London, and Globe office for £400, and there was a policy of £175 on the contents, in the same office. The Brooklyn fire brigade was in early attendance at the fire, and by the time that the city brigade's motor was run up the hill the local men had put out the fire. To put out a &re and save your house from destruction, use a Minimax fire extinguisher. Effective and speedy. A boy or girl can use it. A. T. Bate will tell you all about it. — Advt.
