NEW JOINT FOR WATER-PIPES.
[BY TELEGBAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A new sleeve joint for spiral steel Water-pipes has been invented by Mr. W. Cooper, an employee of the Christchurch City Council, and tested with very satisfactory results. The sleeve is intended for use in the event of a fracture occurring in the joint now used. The latter consists ol a cylindrical chamber, into which the pipes are set, thei/ ends being kept apart to enable house connections to be made by two studs on the interior of the chamber, and the joint is made watertight by two collars which "are bolted together and operate upon rubber packing. The fracture of this joint after the pipes have been laid involves a great deal of labour in effecting repairs, as a new sleeve can be fitted only by opening up the trench for a length of two pipes. The joint invented by Mr. Cooper, and provisionally protected, consists of a sleeve made in two parts, which have simply to be fitted round the jointed .ends and bolted in position. The joint has been subjected to a test of 3501b to the square inch, with entirely satisfactory results. It is understood that the manufacturers of the pipes are negotiating with the inventor for the rights of the invention
