The ten horses handicapped for the Horowhenua Cup mad© the acceptance. Lord Soult and Waikaraka were the only withdrawals from the Park Stakes. Waione will make his first appearance in the colours of his new owner, Mr. J. R. M'Donald (president of the club), in the Hack Welter. Marton form may be found worth following in the flat races. Rangihaela, with his penalty, may find some of the light-weights more than a match. The following have incurred penalties for wins at Marton :—: — Clip— Sandstream (101b) 8.8, Pohutu (101b) 8.0. Flying Hack— Waiari (101b) I 9.5, Dolco (161b) 8.2, Aimwell (101b) 8.9. Hack Hurdles— Rangihaeta (101b) 11.6, Tyrannic (101b) 10.9. Welter Hack —Dolce (161b) 8.9. Electric Hack— Waiari (51b) 9.5, Waiata' (101b) 8.12. Holiday excursion fares will be issued between Wellington and Levin* The course is in tip-top order, and some good racing should be witnessed on Wednesday and Thursday next. Paparae'hi and Maidi, who are now trained by their owners, may make their reappearance at Rangitikei. Tyrannic will probably be given a spell after Horowhenua. Sir Lethe will make his next appearance at Martinborough, where he is trained and owned. Mr. Hikaka, who owns and trains Waiari, is the Taranaki native sportsman who used to race St. Claimer. Waiari was the Best-looking horse at the Marton meeting. He is bigger than most of the St. Pauls. His dam, Thirlmere, is by Tim Whiffler, from Barbarina. Mr. Hikaka owns a fullbrother to Waiari named Tanekaha. Both can gallop fast, and will no doubt get out of the hack class before the season has far advanced. Menschikoff has a representative at the Horowhenua meeting in the three-year-old Undecided, a lialf-brother to King's Lynn. Menschikoff is now at Mr. Harvey Patterson's Melton Park Stud, Victoria. Mr. Patterson has a liking for New Zealand-bred horses. His team includes Delaware, Lord Kilcheran (by Kilcheran — Fan Tan), and Lady Marina (by Stepniak — Reel). There are two private tracks at Melton Park. The stud includes about twenty-five brood mares, among the number being daughters of Bill of Portland, Pilgrim's Progress, Light Artillery, Wallace, and Martini Henry. There are ten foals by Menschikoff on the farm. After the Marton meeting W. Whittaker took Resign home to Hawkes Bay. He will not fulfil his engagements at the Horowhenua and Rangitikei meetings. First Consul is unlikely to be taken to Rangitikei, and White Lie is to be reserved for Lower Valley. The dinner given at Tattersall's Club last evening on the occasion of the official opening was a highly successful function, and was attended by about eighty people. Stratagem, by Nelson — Dudu, will not be asked to race until the Feilding spring meeting, late in November. Arcadia (Strephon — Miss M'lver), Sir Mauser (Mauser — Culverin,), half-brother to Letherin, the Otago-bred Slipaway (by Casket — Hawthorn), Euroclydon — Lady Ellen filly, half sister to Helen Portland," and Ascot Cup (Mauser — Gold Cup) are other members of the team. Sandstream is the first New Zealand Cup candidate to incur a penalty. At the Canterbury Park meeting on 28th August, M'Grath's pair were topweight in their respective engagements. Tumut had 9st 91b in the Flying Handicap, 6st 71b minimum, and Osiris the same weight in the Stewards' Mile, 7st 71b minimum. Before leaving for Sydney on Friday last Mr. T. H. Lowry withdrew Downfall and Bobrikoff for their Australian engagements. The Hawkes Bay owner informed " The Spade " that he intended to be back for the Wellington spring meeting, and would engage the horses named in the Champion Plate. Lest he should forget, Mr. Bidwill entered Provocation for the w.f.a. event before he left. The presence of All Red, Master Soult, and Nautiform should make the event named easily the draw card at Trentham in the spring Gavotte, dam oi the Marton double winner (Dolce), is a daughter of Vanguard and Symphony, by Perkin Warbeck — Lady of the Lake. Mr. Goodwin's mare belongs to a well-known Canterbury family which produced Jack, who won races for Messrs. Mason and Vallance, and afterwards raced successfully in this island at Martinborough, Opaki, and elsewhere, under the name of Pilgrimage. Dolce may be out of the hack class before her owner gets back to Hawera. The Adelaide Derby winner, Greek, is a son of the New Zealand-bred Pygmalion, by Apremont — Nautilus, full brother to the Wellington Cup winner, Cymscs. Pygmalion was one of the best two-year-olds of his year, and won the C. J.C. Welcome Stakes, Dunedin Stakes, Great Northern Foal Stakes, Wanganui Two- Year-Old Stakes, and C.J.C. Challenge Stakes. Mr. W. R. Wilson, of St. Albans, purchased Pygmalion and Sultan. The colt did not strike form as a three-year-old, but as a four-year-old won the Hopetoun Cup and Malvern Handicap on Boxing Day at Caulfield. The dam of the Adelaide Derby winner is a daughter of Kallistos, by Robinson Crusoe— Bellissima, by Musket — Pulchra. Some of the new blood racing at Miramar on Saturday showed up well. Gold Cup (late Chamois), by Wonderland—Eland, was bred by Mr. George Hunter, and until recently was a member of R. Gooseman's Hastings string. Chamois ran several fair races in the registered ranks last season. She was placed at the Hawkes Bay summer meeting, Napier Park, and Waipukurau. Ora Pinsent (Merriwee — Variety) is full sister to Comedian and Operetta. Two younger members of the family are named Laughter and Fun. Variety was a successful performer in the colours of the late "Mr. Joseph Paul. To .The Workman she produced Variation, Fancy Work, and Apprentice. The most consistent and i-accessful performers racing this season have been Dolce, two starts, two wins ; Los Angelos, two at arts, two wins ; Sir Lethe, three etaxla. thri* win*,' Captain Bell,
