PONY RACES AT MIRAMAR. FRANC WINS SPRING CUP.
The inaugural meeting of the season promoted by the Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club was held at Miraniar on Saturday The weather was excellent, there was^a very large attendance, and the course was in good order, of bookmakers plied their calling, and in most cases investors had the best ,of the d«al. Gold Cup (late Chamois) was easily the best- competitor seen at the meeting. Another promising recruit in Channel, a Captain Webb —-Punavfai mare, showed good form, but did not score a winning bracket. In the Cup she was seriously interfered with at the stark but ran a good race, and eventually finished third. Owing to tho number of acceptors, thb .Maulou Handicap had to be run jn two divisions. The meeting was well managed, and the racing on the whole was interesting. Details: — EPSOM HANDICAP, of 20 soya; 5£ furlongs. Mr. J. Oakhuvst'fi. Ora Pinsent, an outsider, got away well, and was really never extended, winning with consummate ease by eight lengths, three lengths between second and third. Time, Imin 18 2-ssec. MAIDEN HANDICAP, of 20 soys; 4? ,furlongs.furlongs. First Division.—Mr. J. Burkes Gold Cup (late Chamois), by Wonderland — Cloud (Mallowes), 8.10, 1; Mr. E. Meyers' Merreng (Merton), 8.6, 2j Mr. F. H. Day's After Dark (Todd), 9.10, 3. Also started—Sirrah 8.8, Ellen 8.3, Needlagirl 8.4, Airship 8.3, and i-iady Fenella 8.3. This was simply a procession for Gold/Cup, who won by a dozen lengths, neck second and third. Time, Imin 3sec. Second Division—Mr. C. Cheeseman's Mahaku, by Mahaka— <■ Nelly (Carmont), 8.0, 1; Messrs. Millers' Stranded (Cooper), 8.6, 2; Miss Eenner's Dumps (Olliver), 8.3, 3. Also started—Miss Ruby 8.3, Paul 8.10,. Mahaku went away with a lead, and won by half. a length; a"poor third. Paul was favourite, but the winner was well supported. Time, Imin 3isec. FinalGold Cup 1 Mahaku 2 SPRING CUP HANDICAP, of 40 soys. Rix furlongs. Mr. J. Burke' fa Franc, by Morriwee —Rouble (H. Mallowes), 10.4 ... 1 Mr. E. R. Meyer's Inspiration (Merton), 8.7 2 Mr. W. Horu's Channel (Carmont), 8.4 3 Also started—Aurifera 12.0, Billy 9.9. From a poor start, in which Channel was badly left, Inspiration shot out and led Franc over three furlongs. Franc then cime away, and y. on by a length; fair third. Time, Imin 26 4-ssec. Franc was a warm favourite. ' WONDERLAND HANDICAP, of 20 soys. Four furlongs. Miss Walker's Huia, by Diplomat — Blackberry (Hema), 9.8 1 Mr. P. Blair's Raetiti (Home), 8.4 2 Mr. R. Eager's Wee Nannie (Todd), 8.11 3 Also started—Herculean 11.13, Dorina 8.8, Trixie 8.7, Mutiny 8.3, Dumps 8.0, Lady Fenella 8.0. From a good start Wee Nannie was in front, closely followed by Huia. These two made all the running. Huia won by half q, length, and Raetiti came very fas# and cut Wee Nannie out of second place. Time, 57 l-ssec. The winner w,as the favourite. FLYING HANDICAP, of 25 soys. Four and a half furlongs. Mr. J. Driscoll's Anglican, by Cyrenian —Etonia (Buchanan), 10^6 1 Mr. W. Horn's Channel (Carmont). 8.5 2 Mr. A. Brown's Moata (Pearson), 10.12 . :\ 3 Also started—St. Helena 10.10, Inspiration 9.0, Petronel 8.12, Merrimanu 8.9, Inkerman 8.7. This was the best race of the day. The wagering was very even, and the field moved away to a good start. Anglican was nicely placed throughout, and won by half a length, length second and third. Time, Imin 3 3-ssec.
