Cook) is considering a suggestion that the Commonwealth should defray the cost of training Australian cadets in the Royal Navy. LIEUTENANT SHACKLETON. LONDON, 14th June. Lieutenant Shackleton was met by his wife at Dover, where the explorer was accorded a great ovation. OVERDUE CRUISER REACHES PORT. PARIS, 14th June. The armoured cruiser Jules Ferry, which had been missing for a fortnight, bound from the Levant homeward, has. reached port. She was delayed by a breakdown in the machinery. WORKS OF ART FOR THE NATION. LONDON, 14th Juno. The National Art Collection Fund, which was instrumental in securing Holbein's picture, "Duchess of Milan" (lately sold by the Duke of Norfolk), has •received from King Edward a donation of 100 guineas as the nucleus of a reserve to make purchases in case of sudden emergencies. OBITUARY. LONDON, 14th June. Sir Daniel Cooper, Bart., is dead, at the age of sixty-one. [Deceased was* a son of the Sir Daniel Cooper who was first Speaker of the New South Wale& Assembly after the granting of a Constitution to the colony, and succeeded his father in the baronetcy in 1902. He was a member of the Jockey Club and of the Royal Yacht Squadron.]
