The colt Leo Grand made a somewhat sensational first appearance on the Richmond racecourse. Ridden by a Westralian jockey named Egan, he passed the judge's box the first time six lengths ahead. Under the impi'e&Siqn that; he had won,, Egan eased up, but the shouts of the spectators and the pace of the other horses made him realise that he had miscalcu- j lated the distance. i To the surprise of every one, however, Leo Grand caught the leaders ;n; n a dozen strides, but in the straight he again stumbled and got rid of his rider, an outsider winning. The stewards severely reprimanded Egan for his carelessness. Tho horse carried a lot of money.
