ACTION FOR LIBEL.
A SETTLEMENT COME TO. [BI TELEGBAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, This Day. A case set down for Mr. Justice Willams and a jury this morning, was ono in which Robert Hewitson, farmer, of Lovell's Flat, clanned' £200 damages from James Christie, publisher of the Bruce Herald, for alleged libel. There was at the time a County Council election on, and Mr. Jasper Clark was on© of the candidates. Concerning his candidature, a letter appeared in the Bruce HeraM, signed "Ciichton Skiing Electois," in which sentences occurred which, •it was alleged, seriously reflected on the character of Hewitson, who wae supporting >Mr. Clark's candidature. ■When the case was called on to-day it was stated that a settlement had been made, defendant agreeing to pay plaintiff £50 and costs, aaid to print an apology in his papei. 'Mr. Solomon, K.C., who appeared for the defendant, said the letter appeared without the latter' s knowledge, and when he was approached he offered to apologise and to make remuneration to settle the affair, but the amount offered was not considered sufficient. He felt satisfied that the allegations of misconduct were without foundation, and defendant had not sought in any way to defend his action. . '
