Somewhat unexpectedly the Union Com- I pany's steamer Tatune arrived in the stream at 8.40 o'-clock last night from Tahiti and Barotonga. As the lioiir was too late for the port, health inspection, the vesbel remained at anchor m the stream for the night, and berthed at the Jervois-quay Breastworks shortly before 9 o'clock tlna morning. Mr. M. P. Caffin, the ship's purser, reports that the Talnne left Wellington on Wednesday, 21st April, at S p.m. A stiong northwest breeze was encountered, and lasted till midnight, thence moderate to light .northerly breezes prevailed till arrival at Rarotonga at 7.52 p.m. on the 26th April. Departure was taken at noon the ne\t da>, and the vessel met with light variable winds and sea until arrival at Papeete at 4.5 p.m. on the 20th April. Here passengers transferred to the R..M.S. Marlposa, cargo and mails were exchanged, and that vessel sailed for San Francisco. The Talune left for Earotonga on her return at 1.26 p.m. on the Ist inst., and met with a light southerly Srind; till arrisal- J afc Rarotonga at 2,55 p.m,

on the 3rd inst. Fruit cargo was worked, and the voyage to Y/eUington resumed at 4.48 pjn. on the 4th. Moderate to fresh southerly breezes were met with until the morning of tho lltli, thence a south-west gale, heavy sea. and thick rainy weather prevailed till arrival. Cape Palliser was. abeam at 5.45 p.m. yesterday. Cargo brought by the Talune comprises the following :— l2O bunches, 2592 cases, and 21 kits bananas, 3334 cases oranp.es, 2138 sacks copra, 18 bales cotton, 3 bundles lecne de mer, 5 sacks fungus, 3 sacks seed, 85 packages oils, paints, etc., 70 casks rubricating oil, 106 cases periodicals, 40 packages sundries, 149 cases 51.0.P. shell, 95 rolls roofing paper, 2 packages honey, 4 cases varrilla. To-day the Talune was engaged in dis--cliarging, and she leaves this evening for Westport. MOANA, FROM SYDNEY. Well up to time the Union Company's s.s. Moana arrived in the stream from Sydney -direct a* 7.30 o'clock this morning, and, after •the usual medical inspection, berthed at No. 6, Queen's Wharf, shortly after 9 a,m. The vessel left Sydney at 3 p.m. on Saturday last, and the passage -was not a very pleasant one, owing to strong southerly winds and high seas encountered nearly the whole way. Considerable quantities of spray swept her decks, which presented a wet appearance on arrival. Nevertheless, she covered the distance in the good time of 8 days 15 hours. The Moana's cargo for Wellington comprises the following :— 25 cases champagne, '21 cases spirits, 28 hogsheads spirits, 115 cases whie, 5 casks wine, 139 cases Geneva, 250 "cases schnapps, 530 cases tea, 81 bags ,flour, 600 bags salt, Bjs bags rice, 13 cases tobacco, 512 pieces timber, 240 bass coke, 188 iron bark jjiles, 77 drums naphtha, 555 ■cases fruit, 1 bull. * To-momwv at 5 p.m. the Moana is timed ■to sail for southern ports, Hobart, and Mel.bomnc. THE WAIMEA. A message from Nelson advises that the Anchor Company's new steamer Wfiimea arrived there from Govan, Scotland, yesterday afternoon. The little . vessel arrived in excellent trim. She made the passage via Suez in 76 days. Captain M. Irvine brought the vessel to New Zealand. The Waimea is of tho same type as the Alexander, but somewhat larger. AOTEA AT MELBOURNE. The Shaw-Savill liner Aotea, which arrived at Melbourne on Friday last from London, will finish discharging her Australian cargo at Sydney, and after filling up her bankers, will sail for Auckland « about the 19th May, and should arrive there about the 24th May. She will call at Wellington about the 31st May, and after discharging at Lyttelton, should arrive here about the 7th June. The Aotea will load at Port Chalmers after discharging at Dunedin. THE OPAWA. It has now been arranged that the New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. Opawa is to sail finally from Lyttelton for London. She left the Bluff yesterday for Timaru, and will then proceed to Auckland, Napier, Picton, and Lyttelton, sailing about the end of the month. A smart act of seamanship has been attracting notice at the Bluff. The Opawa and Langton Grange (writes the correspondent of the Otago Daily Times) had both arrived outside the harbour. Captain Macdonald (pilot) took charge of the former, leaving his "assistant (Captain Lovett) to bring in the other. When about half-way m a dense fog came down, enveloping everything at the shortest distance. In that dilemma Captain Maedonald thought it advisable not to proceed inside, but with the Langton Grange in his wake, how dose thereto be could not possibly guess, the difficulty was. what to do. The situation was both awkward and dangerous. Nevertheless, he backed the steamer out, and, getting into a safe berth, remained at anchor until the fog cleared away It was then found that the -whole manoeuvre had been worked out on a very narrow mar.gin—so narrow that it may well be named -a close shave." The Moorabool's 4000 tons of Newcastle coal is to be distributed among Wellington Lyttelton, Timarn, and Dimedm. Advices frqja Sydney state that the barque Hippatas, wbich, it will be remembered was an. object of much interest owing to her damage in the J shed fire of some weeks ago has been chartered to load coal at Newcastle for Napier. A Patea paper ctates tnat the tender of Mr ' Y'* H> Brown > of Anekland, has been accepted for building the new steamer for the Patea-Wetlington trade. The dimensions are 100 ft long by 20ft beam with cargo capacity of no tons on Bft draught Tho engines are to* be 200 h.p., and the vessel will be built on tho lines of the Kinpaka. It is understood that the price was in the neighbourhood of £6000.
