PAYMENT OF WAGES.
A fine of £5 was inflicted on the Patea Shipping Company hy Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., this morning ior a breach of the Seamen's Award and Shipping Act, in that the company failed to pay seamen on the steamer Kapiti within the prescribed time. The breach was admitted, but it was explained on behalf of the company that the men were paid on arrival in Wellington as a matter of convenience to them, but that in future the award would be adhered to. Mr. W. T. Young, for the union, stated that the vessel was in Wanganui on the Bth o-f the month, a day after the prescribed time allowed by the award (seven days), in which to pay wages, it tho vessel is at a port in which there is a branch of a bank. The clause had been in the award for some years, and owners should be conversant with it. As it was a minor breach, the men having been paid in Wellington on the 10th of the month, his Worship said a fine of £5 wouldsuffice.
