THE FIRE AT MILLERTON.
i PREPARING TO FLOOD THE MINE. £BT TELEGBAPH.— PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WESTPORT, This Day. All efforts at the Millerton mine are being concentrated in blocking up the outlet preparatory to flooding the mine. The cable from Granity to the top" of the hill being burnt, necessitates material for blocking purposes being packed. There is scarcely any water available at present, but should heavy rain occur, it is thought that the fire could be put out in a couple of days. The average output lately has been 24,000 tons per month. This afternoon Mr. J. Dixon, manager of the Westport Coal Company's mines, telegraphed as follows to the Mines Department : — "Fire now sealed off. Locality favourable for flooding. Preparations have been completed for carrying out this proposition. Trust few weeks mine will be opened again."
