The fire started- in-'-W'haler'jßros.' bootj shop, and spread rapidly right and left.. Fortunately, it was' a-calm night. Following is a list of other premises-; 'burned: — M'SPherson, -,tailor. Nichoi, jeweller. Finch, stationer (double story). Labour Department's office. J. P. Aldridge, insurance agent. Hautapu Tea Booms. Whiteombe, dentist. Ellis and Darvill, universal providers. Wong Kee, fruiterer. Jones, painter. Hodgson, plumber. •W. Garner, seed merchant. Not a stick of timber is left. The' police sergeant's residence- and shops on tha opposite side of the street were only saved by strenuout exertions of a crowd <of willing workers. Tho fire brigade was just proceeding to the train, to go to Auckland for the demonstration, but remained 'behind. Its services, however, •were 'of little use, as no water was available. The progress of the firev.was eventually stopped by pulling down buildings adjoining the police sLation.
