PETONE AND HUTT NEWS.
On the motion of tne Rev. A. Thomson, the Petone School Committee has decided, in view of its probable endeavour towards getting a secondary school erected, to ask the Petone Borough Council to take steps to secure another half-acre of land alongside the present technical school for the purposes of a high school. Eevs. A. Thomson, J. D. Russell, and the chairman were appointed a sub-com-mittee tv ioport to tne^uext meeting. Mr. Purser, returning officer for the Hutt Valley Tramway District, formally advertises that the first election of members to the Hutt Tramway Board will be nelct or Tuesday, 2nd February* Wednesday, 27th January, is the last day ioi' receiving nominations of candidates. "An Old Settler" writes with reference to ;i paragraph published in the Post some nights ago, legardmg the dilapidated condition of the Upper Hutt Police Station. He- states that the building was erected 33 years ago, and its rnsuitabieness as a police station has been represented uj the proper authorities from time to time during the last fifteen years. There was a balance of nearly £17 on the right side a*, the result of the Petone School picnic. The school library will benefit to the extent of £5, plus Government subsidy. A preliminary meeting in connection with tho Hospital Sunday demonstrations to be held at Petone on 6th and 7th February was held in the Mayor's room last evening. It is intended to solicit tho co-operation and assistance of the Wellington bands', Hutt band, Hutt Valley Rifles, workshops, Gear Company, and Hutt and Wellington Fire Brigades, St. John Ambulance Association, and Friendly Societies. The meeting resolved that the Mayor arik the Minister for Railways for free passes for those bands taking part in the gathering. Next week a ladies' meeting will be held. Mr. D. Jones is secretary of the movement: Rev. J. D. Russel l presided .over last evening's meeting of the Hutt No-license League, when a hearty vote of congratulation was accorded the Masterton League on finally carrying No-license. It was decided that a presentation of a purse of sovereigns and an illuminated address bo made at an early date to Mr. T. Townsend, tho late secretary.
