Mr. Taft, President-elect of the United States, has decided to pay a visit to the Panama Canal in January, hoping thereby to counteract reports concerning disaster to the Gatun dam, which many believe, though they have been officially denied. Owing to the Gatun River flowing across the line of the canal, it was decided to erect a dam and turn the course of the river. Expert opinion has differed as to ths adequacy of the protective works.
