iVICTIM IN A SERIOUS CONDITION. [BT TELEGBArH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, This Day. George M'Guirk, about 30 years of age, formerly an inmate of a mental hospital, was arrested last night on a charge of attempted murder of his brother-in-law, George Berrett, a resident of Devonport. M'Guirk, having been refused entrance to Berrett's house, Attempted to break down the back door. Berrett stepped outside and threatened M'Guirk with the-polico, and the latter turned to leave the premises. Suddenly, it is alleged, he seized what appeared to be a knife, and stabbed Berrett in the neck. The wound missed the main artery, but went through the muscles of the neck to the vertebrae. Berrett, after being attended by a doctor, was removed to the hospital. His condition is serious, but it is not supposed the result will prove fatal.
