Mr. W. H. Frethey has been appointed accountant in the Tourist Department. Mr. A. Mills has resigned his position as inspector under the Department of Agriculture. Mr. W. A. Thomson, of the firm ot Messrs Thomson and Brown, will leave next week for Sydney. Mr. J. Kirkcaldio and Mr. Sidney Kirkcaldie are passengers by the Maheno for Sydney to-day. Mr J. M. Highnett is gazetted an inspector for the purposes of the Slaughtering and Inspection Act. The Prime Minister 13 to-day at Invercargill, the lion. J. A. Millar at Temuka, and the Hon. Dr. Findlay at Dannevirke. Mr. Fitzgerald, the oldest inspector under the Otago Education Board, retires at the end of the year, telegraphs our Dunedin correspondent. It is reported (says a Christchurch Press Association telegram) that Archdeacon Scott, vicar of St. Saviour's, Sydenham, intends to leave for England, to take up parish work there. Mr. Alfred Hill, of Wellington, has coi.sented to be nominated for the position of judge of the North Island Brass Bands' contest at Hastings in February next. Another of the old mining fraternity, records the West Coast Times, his passed away in the person of William Rea. For over forty-four years he traversed the goldfields of New Zealand, most of which time he spent on the West Coast. Mr. B. S. Fulton, formerly in the service of the Union Bank in New Zealand, is now on the staff of the National Bank of South Africa at Pretoria. He has been granted six months* leave ot absence, and is at present on a visit to the Dominion. A Hokitika telegram states that Mr. H. L. Michel was presented with a purse of a hundred sovereigns by his supporters at the recent election at Kumara. The proceedings were most' enthusiastic. Mr. Michel is to be presented with a purse in other parts of the electorate, including Hokitika. A Dnnedm Press Association telegram announces the death of John Fitch, who took part in the battle of Trl-el-KeDi: in the Second Battalion Highland Light Infantry, and 'was mentioned in despatches. Deceased was formerly a member of .the Duj^din Garrison Band. Mr. W. H. Munro was yesterday presented with tokens of goodwill by the combined staffs of th& Dominion on hio relinquishing the position of manager of that paper. Mr. Munro, who leaves for Sydney to-day, is succeeded by Mr. A. Blanton, late manager of the Daily Mail, Brisbane. Leave of absence was granted by tho Education Board yesterday afternoon to the following teachers :— Mr. W. H. Clark, Kereru; Mrs. Lock, Nikau; Mr. Connell, Upper Hutt; and Miss Ashworth, Mount Cook Infants. Tho following resignations were accepted : Miss M. Whittaker, Waimanu ; Miss A. M. Brown, Miss A. H. Tasker, Plimmerton; Miss H. Osborne-Gibbes, Kilbirniej Miss F. Pritchard, Taratahi West. Appointments were made as follow : — Newtown, Miss C Finlayson ; Mitchelltown, Miss H. A. Taylor; Gladstone, Miss A. G. Thwaites, Mantramafre, Miss J. Mackellar. Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., secretary of the Wellington Wharf Labourers' Union, was last evening presented with a handsome Gladstone bag. The presentation was made by Mr. James Bruton, on behalf of Mr. M'Laren's friends on the management committee of the union, to commemorate his election to the House of Representatives as member for Wellington East. Mr. M'Laren is leaving for Australia to-day on business connected with his federation. His duties as secretary of the Wharf Labourers' Union will, during his absence, be carried out by Mr. T. Smith. Mr. F. Burton, president of the union, is also a passenger for Sydney by the same steamer.
