HELPING THE HOSPITAL

CAMPAIGN FOR TO-MORROW AND SUNDAY. A few -weeks ago the citizens of Wellington gave several hundreds of pounds to the ladies who went abroad with little boxes, but the promoters of Hospital Saturday and Sunday are confident that those- gifts of pennies, threepenny bits, sixpences, and larger coins did not exhaust the capital's fund of generosity. Therefore, to-morrow the irresistible collectors will be at the corners, and it is confidently expected that the people will not pass by with an averted eye or gaze fixed upon the heavens or tho pavement. The- people are gently asked to remember their own Hospital. "Tho State shooM see to it," say some, out there are countless calls on the State's purse, and the Government dower to a particular institution is strictly limited. If the Wellington Hospital is to retain its premiership honours, tho people in health must give for the sake of the sick. Soon about '£11,000 will be required for a new fever hospital, and there are other necessary works waiting, requiring altogether a' sum not much below £30,000. Up to this afternoon, not a great, num; ber o£ ladies had volunteered for tomorrow's battle for funds. The success or failure of the attempt depends on the ladies. Those who feel the spirit moving them to do meritorious service in a food cause are invited to visit the layor's room at the Town Hall this evening, at 8 o'clock, for boxes and badges. On Sunday afternoon seven bands will j give a concert on the green, of the Basin Reserve, beginning at 3 o'clock. All the principal streets between Lambton- 1 quay and Newtown tramway sheds will oe traversed by a brass band, marching to the Basin. The order of playing on the ground will probably be : — 1 Tramway, 2 Jupp's, 3 Petone Brass, 4 Garrison, 5 Petone Citizens, 6 Battalion, 7 Newtown Brass. At the close of the individual band items Mr. W. Jupp will / conduct a perfoimancc by the massed bands. Invitations to speak will be extended to the Mayor (the Hon. T. W. Hislop), the Attorney-General (the Hon. Dr. Findlay), and the Hon. G. Fowlds (whose portfolios include Hospitals).
