ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS.

Two more events were competed for by members of the Petone Junior Club's Athletic Club yesterday evening. They resulted :—: — 100 yds Handicap.— First heat— Smitn, 1, J. Symons, 2. Second heat — Donovan, 1;. Guthrie, 2. Third heat— J. Kyan, 1; Miller \ 2. Final— J. Ryan, 11yds, 1 ; Miller, U4yds, 2 ; Smith, 11yds, 3 Time, 10 2-ssec. Nineteen starters. 880 yds Handicap.— Nankivell, 25yds, 1 : Howe, 50yds, 2 ; Fraser, 25yds, 3. Time, 2min 18 3-ssec. Fourteen starters. During the recent •election campaign Mr. Wilford, M.P., stated that he would strongly support the repiesentations that had been made to have the late train from the city on Wednesday nights extended to the Upper Hutt, as had been done with the same train on Saturday nights. The Saturday extended service had been much appreciated, and now that the Wednesday request has been also granted, it -will be interesting to see how many "midnighters" will take advantage of it: The ■new arrangement gtartedi last night, when the motor train connected at Lower Hutt with the 11.30 train from the city. The night was such an, unpleasant one, however, that it could not be taken as a test. Upper Hutt's new post office, which is within a few weeks of completion, makes no pretensions to architectural beauty. It is, however, a commodious building, and should prove suitable for the requirements of the distict for many years to come. The Gear Company's employees held their annual picnic at Upper Hutt yestciday.
