Enquiries mido by local merchants have elicited that the Government freight rates* ane already in force over the Manawatu line in place of the preferential rates adopted by the company to, compete with the Waharapd. line and the Foxton water carriage. As a result freights have enormously increased, the following instances being quoted : — kerosene, from 24s 6d to 45<i 10c! : sugar, 24s 6d to 38s 7d ; rice, 24s 6d to 325; soap, 24? 6d to 32f. Consequently, the local merchants are already ordering consignments via tho Foxton route, thus availing themselves of cheap water carriage.
