HIGHEST HONOURS. APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNORS.
REPLY TO SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SUGGESTION. By Telegraph — Press Association.— Copjrigbt. (Received November 26, 10.20 a.m.) ADELAIDE, This Day. In the House of Assembly, the Premier, the Hon. T. Price, tabled a despatch from Lord Crewe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, with reference to the appointment of State Governors. The despatch says the suggestion that appointment should be made from Australian citizens involved a far-reaching change, which could not, Lord Crewe considers, be entertained in any case, unless it applied to all the Australian ' States, not to one alone, and until public J opinion had demonstrated overwhelm- { iugly in its favour. He adds : "No doubt much might be said in favour of the Canadian system, under which the central i Government appoints powerful provincial j Governors. If tho people of Australia desired a similar system, the Imperial Government would in all probability be* disposed to advise the King to meet their wishes." The despatch is in reply to a memorandum sent to Lord Crewe by Mr. Price, in which it was pointed out that "there is no position of honour and trust in the State which should be regarded as beyond the reach of our most distinguished citizens, and we request that before the appointment of a new Governor is made, consideration should be given to these views."
