J. P.Luke (G ) 3884 J. E. Fitzgerild \G.) .. 2736 The Suburbs results were all in under the hour at the headquarters of the returning officer, Mansfield-street. The first result through was from Seatoun, at exactly two and a half minutes part 7, two and a half minutes after the closing of the poll. This celerity found the returning officer. Mr. J. W. Salmon, fully prepared for the communication of results to the press and to the Prime Minister; everything, in fact, working with mechanical regularity. At 7.8 p.m. Goldie's Brae followed, and Palm Grove a minute leter The elimination of the local option vote greatly facilitated the count and communication of electoral results. At 7.45 there were only three results to come in, and five minutes later the lasi result was telephoned —that of Mansfield-street No. 1 booth. There was a small crowd waiting outside the booth, but a bigger one at Penett's druggist shop, Riddifordstreet, where the numbers were posted in large letters and figures. The position of the candidates at the first ballot was :— Luke, 2204 ; Fitzgerald, 1908, of the 6733'-votes cast, the remainder being distributed amongst Messrs. R. B. Williams, W. T. Young, F. T. Moore,» and J. W. Braithwaito. The absolute majority required was then 3367. Informal votes numbered 165. The following are tho details of the polling at the various booths :—: —
Totals 2736 3884 There are four absentee (seamen's) votes to come in. Ihe voting at the poll on Tuesday, 17th inst, was as follows :—Luke, 2204; Fitzgerald, 1908.; Williams, 1367 ; Moore, 644; Young, 613; Braithwaite, 54.
