A. L. Herdman (0) 3696 F. G. Bolton (G.) 2b!Jd By a majority uf 798 votes Mr. A. L. Herdman, Opposition candidate, defeated Mr. F. G. Bolton, Liberal candidate, in second ballot for Wellington North. At the first ballot, Mr. Herdman head, ed the poll, but failed by 500 votes to secure an absolute majority. His sup porters on that occasion numbered 2824, Mr. 3olton's votes being 1858, and those of Mr. Izard, the Liberal candidate, 1833. So opposed were many of the gentler sex to the second ballot that they declared they would not rxercise their rights at the poll yesterday. However, a fine day, fashionable motor-cars, and diligent chauffeurs enticed voters out from aIJ the remote quarters and made the poll almost as heavy at the second ballot as at the first, the respective figures being 6623 and 6793. W4th all the precautions taken to uvoiu informal voting, thori, were 29 informal votes recorded yesterday as against 127 at the first ballot. Mr. A. fl. Holmes, Returning Officer, and his assistants again completed their returns in a remarkably fast time. By three minutes to 8 o'clock all the returns were in except Tinakori-ioad • tktee cam* to hand six minutes later. The first figures were cent in at 7.8 o'clock from a sinali booth at the Town Hall. They snowed Mr. Bolton to nave made a flying start. The Liberal so<ei got into stride, and svhen Herbert-street, bhe first complete return, was handed v. ht> nad lUo vote* against his opponent's 88. Twenty minutes after the poll closed Mr. Herdman assumed the lead, and five minutes later led by 673 votes. Thence, onward he increased his led until he reached Syd-nt-y-street, where Mr. Bolton made up 146 votes. The Opposition's figures received a final spurt at Tinakori-road. The voting, at the poll on Tuesday, 17th inst., was as follows : —Herdman, 2824; Bolton, 1858; Izard, 1833; BodIcy, 13-1.
