THE SECOND BALLOT. RESULTS OF YESTERDAY'S POLL.
OPPOSITION STRENGTHENED. WELLINGTON'S VERDICT. REFORM CANDIDATES RETURNED.
Aifter the Second Ballot Bill had gone through Parliament, Mr. i). M'Laren dubbed it the "Second Bullet Bill," because he believed it was a weapon deBigned for the discomfiture of the Government's critics, including himself. Yet the first barrel killed the Government captain for Wellington East, Mr. M'Lean, and the Government lieutenant, Mr. Winder, and the second barrel put Mr. Atkinson out of action, leaving Mr. M'Laren as solo survivor. In some other districts the second ballot swivel-gun turned on the Ministerialists, and bombarded them with sorrow and regret. This result, however, did not displease the mighty crowd, which made a garden of faces around The Evening Posu last night, narcissi, sunflowers, marigoldß, and even poppies, nodding and swaying in the breeze of emotion. The multitude took a spotting interest in the second ballot gun, and the enthusiasm ■was hearty when the Opposition's bag began to be bulky. The return ut men, haloed with O, suited the mood of the masses which had rejected all the Government nominees for Wellington City. The first notable cheer of the evening was for Mr. R. A. Wright when Vogeltown's verdict — Wright 46, Barber 30was hoisted on The Post's board. The returns then followed fast upon one another's heels. The swing doors of the huge board had little rest, and the paste brushes paused not in the work of letting the people know what they had done. By 7.30 the multitude knew that Messrs. Herdman, Wright, M'Laren, and Luke weir the probable winners, and the knowledge was soon made certain. Ther. came speeches from victors and vanquished, much mutual congratulation about fair play, much cheering, and not a little excitement. After the local course of the ei?ctorai least was done, tho guests had many other dishes, sufficient to entertain them till -after ten O'clock.
